What's the difference between a health-tested and untested breeding cat?

A health-tested breeding cat has typically been screened for conditions known to affect the breed, such as HCM (via cardiac ultrasound) and SMA (via DNA testing), before being paired for breeding. An untested cat may carry these conditions unknowingly.

Testing doesn't eliminate all risk, but it meaningfully reduces the likelihood of passing on known, screenable conditions and reflects a higher standard of breeding practice. Concretely, a health-tested breeding cat generally has documentation to show for it: an echocardiogram report from a veterinary cardiologist assessing heart wall thickness for signs of HCM, and DNA test results showing clear, carrier, or affected status for conditions like SMA. A cattery practicing responsible testing also tends to repeat cardiac screening periodically over a breeding cat's life, rather than relying on a single clear result from years earlier, since some heart changes develop with age.

An untested cat may be perfectly healthy — but nobody actually knows, including the breeder, until or unless a problem shows up, sometimes only after it's already been passed to kittens. Pedigree paperwork or registration alone doesn't say anything about health testing; a cat can have an impressive pedigree and still never have had an echocardiogram or DNA panel done. It's reasonable, and increasingly standard practice, for prospective kitten owners to ask breeders directly for copies of health testing documentation on the kitten's parents, rather than taking claims of "health tested" at face value.

The practical stakes for a kitten buyer are real: a kitten from untested parents carries an unknown, potentially higher risk of conditions like HCM or SMA showing up later, which can mean unexpected veterinary costs, a shortened lifespan, or a difficult health journey with a beloved pet. It's not a guarantee either way, but the difference in known risk is meaningful. We're glad to share documentation of the health testing behind any of our breeding cats — contact us with questions, or see available kittens.
